Workshop on Construction of MCQ

The workshop started with the recitation of the Holy Quran, the dean/principal started the first session and introduced Department of Medical Education of Khyber College of Dentistry, Peshawar to the participants of the workshop. The internal facilitators of the workshop were the faculty members of the Department of Medical Education Khyber College of Dentistry, Peshawar.

In the first session of the workshop there was an interactive lecture/ presentation by Dr. Muslim Khan on the objectives of Department of Medical Education and how to develop Department of Medical Education in a Dental/ Medical College. He emphasized that the department is the backbone of every medical/dental college, Educational Psychology, Teaching/ Learning, Research, Curriculum Review, Assessment and Evaluation are the main areas in department format.  He also gave a brief about the various assessment tools. 

Dr. Brekhna Jamil, Assistant Professor Department of Medical Education Khyber Medical University, Peshawar who was the external Facilitator of the Workshop, gave an interactive lecture/ Presentation on MCQ construction; she gave a brief anatomy of the MCQ construction/ Anatomy of the MCQs. The Good and Bad about MCQ validity and reliability of MCQs as assessment tools.

After the refreshment and the tea break, the group activity started, The participants were divided into two groups, Group A comprising of Basic Sciences Faculty and Group B comprising of Clinical Sciences Faculty. The group task was given; every faculty member was given a task to prepare/construct an MCQ. 

After the group activity there was a lunch and Prayers break of 1 hour, after this break the, Faculty members 5 from Basic and 5 from clinical sciences presented their MCQs on Power point presentation. The participants had a problem in Stem writing, which were corrected and rectified in group discussion with External Facilitator Dr. Brekhna Jamil and Internal Facilitators. In the next session the MCQs of higher and lower cognitive domain were Separated.


In the end the feedback was taken from the workshop, about the learning environment and the facilitators, and the Workshop proceedings were closed by word of thanks and appreciation by the Professor Dr. Ghulam Rasool, Dean/ Principal Khyber College of Dentistry, Peshawar to the participants and the both the external facilitator Dr. Brekhna Jamil and internal facilitators for arranging this important academic activity. Prof. Dr. Ghulam Rasool also emphasized the importance of the research culture in academic organization; he further added that our vision is to produce skilled doctors/dental professionals, with background knowledge of research and professionalism. In the end he announced the date of the next workshop amongst the chain of workshops arranged in the institute every month.
